THE AFRICAN OASIS CIC is a social venture working with the local community (Shelthorpe Village and Loughborough in General, Charnwood Borough Council with the support of other local community groups to fully utilize an underused community space (Shelthorpe Garden)
The project was community driven, and the consultation exercise revealed that this type of project/initiative was long overdue and that there is overwhelming support for the project as well as overwhelming demand for access to locally produced organic, fresh, nutritious and affordable. The future of the Shelthorpe project in many ways continues to depend on the community say on it.
As a social venture aimed at addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and social inclusion in Urban Settings. For us Growing Together is more than just a garden; it is the essence of all things combined with nature.
What we would want to do and when?
- Improve our rainwater harvesting system for the garden and having access to drinking water.
- Upgrade our Compost toilets
- Create Forest School/Promoting Biodiversity
- Planting native species and creating varied habitats to ensure the garden becomes a refuge for local wildlife
- A building for educational activities / staff & volunteers /storage.
- Outdoor structures for shelter
